The Underworld

'This is a place for thieves.

Whoever has had something stolen,

whoever feels in the bones

that there is something missing,

must put a penny under his tongue

and start walking 'til he finds itβ€”

follow the path of the lying song.'

The Underworld, Ben Jasnow

In Georgic Fantasy, Ben Jasnow wrote a long poem in several parts to which Woodman responded with paintings. In The Underworld, a new and ongoing project, Woodman has made a series of paintings which form the basis of new poetry by Jasnow. The first nine poems have been published in Poet Lore, they correspond to the first nine paintings and are in the same order.

Paintings 1-9 are oil on etched zinc plate and 20 x 25 cm, paintings 10-13 are oil and charcoal on canvas and 80 x 140 cm.
